Pharmacy Research and Development involves a broad range of systematic work, such as the development of new chemical/drug entities, synthesis, modification and evaluation of existing molecules, potentially leading to improvement of therapeutics, ensuring positive healthcare outcomes.
The pharmacy may support clinical trials involving medicines, biological substances, gene therapy or radiopharmaceuticals. Its role in clinical research is to safeguard subjects and healthcare professionals by ensuring that investigational medicinal products (IMPs) are appropriate for use and are procured, handled, stored and used safely and correctly; ensure that IMPs are managed and dispensed to patients in accordance with duly approved current protocol; and ensure that pharmacy clinical trial procedures comply with relevant guidelines and regulations.
It is essential that appropriate facilities and equipment are available in order to support a clinical trial.
