General anesthetics are drugs used to produce loss of consciousness before and during surgery. In certain minor procedures, an anesthetic may be given in small amounts to relieve anxiety or pain without causing unconsciousness. General anesthetics are usually administered by inhalation or by injection into a vein, but some are given rectally.
Occupational exposures can be controlled by application of principles including engineering and work practice controls, administrative controls, personal protective equipment, and monitoring. In anesthetizing locations and post-anesthesia care units (PACUs), exposure may be controlled by effective anesthetic gas scavenging systems; effective general or dilution ventilation; good work practices; proper maintenance of equipment; and periodic personnel exposure and environmental monitoring.
